Since independence in 1991, Kazakhstan has emerged as a leader in Central Asia. With vision and foresight, it took two courageous steps from its beginning, one to de-nuclearize, and the other to embark on political and economic reform. As the first country in the post-Cold War era to disarm its nuclear arsenal unilaterally, Kazakhstan has been hailed as a model state for international non-proliferation norms. By promoting and protecting the equal rights of all its citizens, Kazakhstan is developing strong, democratic institutions. With an excellent macro-economic reform record and endowed with abundant natural resources, Kazakhstan has enormous potential for foreign investment and long-term economic growth. National objectives are to achieve economic growth based on the continued development of a market economy augmented by high levels of foreign investment in health, education, the well-being of citizens, power engineering, energy and mineral resources, financial services, and infrastructure, with emphasis on transportation and communications. |
