Some fifty chemical elements are produced in Kazakhstan from extracted ores. The final products are metals, alloys and chemical products, including refined and rolled copper and lead, zinc, titanium, magnesium, rare metals, and rare earth elements and their compounds. Non-ferrous metallurgy in Kazakhstan has long been directed at copper, lead and zinc, but, more recently, aluminum, titanium and magnesium have become the focus. Each figures importantly in Kazakhstan's foreign trade. Open cast mines, pit mines, and ore processing plants are combined under the ownership of different groups of enterprises. Kazchrome
JSC, Aluminum Kazakhstan JSC, the Shymkent lead plant, Balkhashmys JSC,
and the Kazakhmys corporation are the industry leaders. The products of
these companies have frequently been accepted as the standard at the London
non-ferrous metals exchange. The continued development of the non-ferrous
metallurgy sector is necessary to ensure local supplies for industry and
regional trade. Once privatization of the "Blue Chip" state
enterprises operating in this sector proceeds, significant opportunities
for foreign investors should begin to open up, particularly as local production
of capital equipment for the emerging oil and gas industry progresses. |
